Fancy Goldfish have been bred selectively in Japan and China since 907AD! They were originally bred from the Prussian Carp – making that their wild ancestor!

Fancy Goldfish are incredibly easy to look after when you know how. There are a few myths surrounding fancy goldfish:

  1. “Goldfish bowls are perfect for goldfish” – Unfortunately they are not – they lack the space these fish need and generally do not have any filtration.
  2. “Goldfish only eat floating flake” – Due to the complicated digestive system they have developed (due the selective breeding to make them look as they do) they do not cope with air in their stomachs well. A sinking pellet or flake is recommended with fancy goldfish.
  3. “Goldfish only live for about 1 year” – With good husbandry they can live for up to 20 years and can grow to 5″ or more!

Fancy Goldfish are large, clumsy fish that produce a lot of waste. It is recommended that you have 75 litres for each fish and have powerful filtration that can cope with their waste levels. Even with a powerful filter, they will also need a 10% waterchange every week. Avoid sharp rocks and decoration as they are clumsy, a sand substrate is recommended and feed them a variety of foods such as sinking pellet, frozen & live invertebrates.

Action against Goldfish Bowls

The adult size of fancy goldfish is way too big for a goldfish bowl!

The adult size of fancy goldfish is way too big for a goldfish bowl!

Goldfish bowls have long been the tradition in keeping goldfish – however many are too small for many goldfishes adult sizes!

Most fancy goldfish reach an adult size of 4 inches long and would need at least 75 litres of water to live in: and that’s just one!  Oranda’s have been known to reach well over 4 inches too, so the bigger the tank that you can afford, the better!

 TIP:

Fancy Goldfish have a complicated digestive systems, they find it difficult ridding air out of their system! We recommend feeding  your goldfish sinking food to avoid any trapped air issues.
