Winter is the time for protection, consider reducing your time on grassy areas to prevent damage in the months to come and repairing any sheds or fencing. Plan your seeds & plants for the year and take time to maintain your tools.

• January can be a very wet and windy month so it is important to check the stakes and supports in your gardens to ensure they can withstand the full force of nature. 
• Remember to keep on feeding the birds in your gardens as food can be scarce for them during these months. It is also important to top up bird baths with fresh water daily, especially when frosts are forecast.
• Now is the time to repair and reshape your lawn edges to define your borders for this season.
• Cut down old stems of sedums to reveal the lush new growth at the base. Remove dead foliage from around herbaceous perennials such as kniphofia.
• Now is the time you should think about pruning your apple and pear trees as well as apply a thick layer of mulch around the base of the trees and other fruit bushes.
• Clear your borders and rake up fallen leaves. Use this time to plan your borders for this season and maybe even move plants that you feel are in the wrong place.
  
• Raise patio containers onto pot feet or bricks to help prevent cracking when the frost comes.
  
• Add some impulse colour such as primroses or pansies to your border edges and patio containers.
• Place a ball in your ponds to prevent it from fully freezing over. It is also the time to drain your water features and switch off the pumps (remove them and store if possible), then fit a water feature cover to protect it through the colder weather.
• Bring in your potted hyacinths and other bulbs under cover to bloom.
